9th Annual Moose Jawg Charity Road Race!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Canada Day!

On the morning of Canada Day, I ran in the 9th Annual Moose Jawg Charity Road Race! I, along with many of my friends and family participated in the race and helped raise money for the Moose Jaw Health Foundation. This was my second year taking part in the race and once again this year, I placed third in the 19 and Under Female 5K! A lot of money was raised and over 500 runners and walkers took part. I had a lot of fun and this year, it was even more fantastic because my mom, brother, Auntie Leo and Auntie Moe all came out to volunteer! We ended off the morning with a fabulous breakfast and awards!

Emmett and I post race! We both ended up getting 3rd in our divisions! Woohoo

Regan, Brooke and I showing off our Kayana Asics!

Graeme(placed 4th in the 5K), Regan (placed 1st in the 5K), Brooke, Me, Emmett (placed 3rd in the 5K) and Jake! :)

Later in the day, a few of us went out kayaking and it was a blast! Numerous mosquitoes and leeches were about, but it was nothing but a great time! The day ended with beautiful fireworks and a severe thunderstorm with plenty of lightning! It really was a fabulous Canada Day!

Journey to Africa...

Jambo!! I just arrived home from Kenya, Africa and boy, was it the trip of a lifetime! I met the most incredible people, ate delicious food and saw things that took my breath away. Here is a shortened version of my Journey to Africa Journal!

Day 1

The Journey to the Maasai Mara has just begun and I couldn't be more excited! I'm going to miss my family and friends very much, but I know that this trip will be very much worth it!

Day 2

We have just arrived in Zurich, Switzerland and all I can say is wow! Our seven hour flight went very smoothly and we are now boarding our plane to Nairobi! In another seven hours, I will be in Africa!

Day 3

We have finally made it to our new home! It has been a whirlwind of adventure in just three days and it has only just begun. We were lucky enough to eat breakfast this morning at the High Commissioner of Canada's house in Nairobi and then we visited the Rothschild Giraffes at the Giraffe Sanctuary. We even got to 'kiss' the giraffes! Reason being, giraffes have antiseptic tongues so any germs or bacteria that would come into contact with it would no longer be harmful. After our giraffe dates, we continued our scenic drive through the Great Rift Valley and finally into Salabwek Village! We were greeted by smiling faces, songs, cheers and a downpour of rain. Today was so much to take in and it has made me very excited to learn all of the things still to come.

Day 4

Today, I woke up to the sounds of howling animals and croaking frogs. Oh, the sounds of the wild. Today has been an absolutely incredible day! We had our first Swahili lesson with Felix the Maasai Warrior (who killed a lion when he was eleven to become a Warrior) and then we received a wonderful welcome at the Opening Ceremonies at Salabwek Primary School. Oh and what a welcome it was. As we rounded the corner of a schoolhouse, three hundred school children in blue uniforms came running at us, grabbing our hands, yelling, "Jambo!" and "What is your name?" I was lost for words. They guided us to four rows of desks and seated us for the ceremony. The blew us away with their songs and dances and the teachers moved us with their words.
"It used to be money that would come and not the people. But it is the peple who make the difference." Male Teacher at Salabwek Primary School
"You come from the other side of the world to help people you don't even know. God has planned well for you." Female Teacher at Salabwek Primary School
I would never think that these beaming children who come running to us in barefeet with open arms and open hearts would end up being the happiest people I have ever met. And the craziest thing about that is that most of their families live on less than a dollar a day.

Day 5

Today was our first day of building, and what a hard day it was! We broke ground on the new classroom as well as continued construction on an uncompleted schoolhouse. It was a challenging day in the sun, but it was extremely rewarding to see our progress.

Day 6

Robin Wiszowaty, author of "My Maasai Life," came to chat with us today! She is such an inspiring person and has a heart of gold. She shared some stories with us on her experiences in Kenya and a quote she said that really moved me was, "Opportunity is not a chance, it is a choice." We finished off our day with a beautiful nature hike and were joined by several young kids some of which were carrying their baby siblings on their backs. They were so happy just to walk along side us and enjoy our company. I have already fallen in love with Kenya and it's people and we are only six days in!

Day 8

At the build site this morning, we had to spend two hours emptying rain water from the three feet deep trench. It was strenuous work and the blazing sun took away so much of our energy. Again, it was a tough day, but very much worth the effort.

Day 10

We went on a Momma walk today! We walked throughout the community with two Mamas named Sharon and Beatrice. They were wonderful! We all had the opportunity to carry 20L of water in a "mitungi" and boy, was it hard! The average Kenyan family used 80L of water and mamas walk an average of 3km which takes about two hours. That means that many of the mamas spend eight or more hours a day just carrying water! The average North American uses about 364L of water. I have learned now how precious water is and am going to make a conscious effort to conserve water when I arrive back home.

Another thing today that was pretty incredible was just how proud the mamas were to show us around their homes even though they were only made out of mud, dung and twigs. If only we were just as proud of our beautiful homes back at home. The people here in Kenya have taught me so much more than I could ever teach or give them. They are remarkable.

Day 11

Today we visited a Primary Boarding School called Nairrok which is a Free The Children School and it is in the Maasai Mara Game Reserve. The kids were so knowledgable and knew english very well. Two young girls told me they wanted to become pilots so they could fly to Canada and thank all of the people who have helped them and assisted in building their school. I though that was awe-inspiring.

Day 12

We just arrived back at Hinterland Camp from our "Mnyama Safari," meaning Animal Journey! Wow, was it a journey! We saw elephants, gazelles, hippos, lions, giraffes, water buffalo, topi, wildabeests, ostriches, hyenas and a cheetah! It was a long twelve hour day in the lorry, but it was definitely worth it.

Day 14

There was a fly in my pancake this morning, I just ate around it because I was so hungry! We finally finished the trench today and we get to pour cement on our next build day. I found this very exciting because that means that after this trip, we would have built the foundation for one classroom and finished another which is quite an accomplishment.

Day 15

Oh my gosh! Today was the greatest day! We went to a village called Sikarrar where a new Free The Children School is just being built and met up with two other Me to We groups. There were some other special guests there; Hedley!! The band was in Kenya filming a MTV Documentary and I got to interview them. It was pretty darn cool! They also performed four songs for us and the children and they did a spendid job. When they started singing, "It's Never Too Late," everyone, including the kids got up and started dancing. It was just like the scene from a movie. It was marvelous.

Day 16

We visited the Mulot Market this morning and I purchased some souvenirs for my family and friends! We also took a look at the Mara River which is the main source of water for people in Kenya. The scene really made me cringe. Donkeys were drinking out of the water as well as going to the bathroom, and at the very same moment, Mamas were fetching water from the same river! I also learned that when an animal dies, the body is thrown into the river because there is no other way to dispose of it. This is the very same water that people clean with, make their food with and most importantly drink. This contaminated water is the main reason for so many illnesses and deaths of young people in Kenya. This to me, is such a terrible situation and is something that together we can change.

Day 17

I met a lovely friend today name Viola. She is so beautiful and kind and seems to have a heart of gold. Viola is in Grade 7 and is thirteen years old and aspires to become a lawyer. I had a pleasant time getting to know her and even picked up some Swahili! I cannot wait to see her again at the Closing Ceremonies tomorrow back at the school.

Day 18

I am happy, sad and excited all in the same moment. I am going to miss all of the children here at Salabwek so much, but I am so excited to share all of the inspiring stories with my friends and family back at home. Today one of the teacher's said to us, "Because of you, the children are getting an education so one day they can go and help other people." This is when I decided that I wanted to get my community together to start raising funds to further the work of Free The Children in Kenya because I saw all of the good things that were occuring because of the organization. Together we really can make a difference and it can happen now.

Day 19

We travelled to the Free The Children Centre today and had a wonderful time touring around and planting trees at the Tree Nursery. We also had the opportunity to shop in the "Duka" meaning store in Swahili and purchase some Me to We stuff! I bought some shirts and they are all organic cotton and sweatshop free! To get your own Me to We Wear check out the Me to We Style Site!

Day 20

Today was community day and it was an interesting day at that. All of us girls woke up bright and early and played the role of the mamas of the community and completed most of the chores they would accomplish on a regular basis. We fetched water, did laundry, served meals, prepared showers and cleaned all of the tents. It was a day that gave us a small taste of what life is like for many people living in Kenya. It shone a new light on the issue for me and now I am more determined to improve the lives of those living here in Salabwek and surrounding communities.

Day 21

Before we arrived here at the airport, we went to the Nairobi Market and wow was that an experience and a half! It was cramped, hot and overwhelming. Numerous "store clerks" were pulling and yelling at you from all different directions beckoning for you to come take a look at their items. I ended up buying some really lovely things to take back home, so it was worth it!

I cannot believe that we are now here in the Nairobi Airport on our way back to Canada. It is a very sad time, but all the same very exciting. I cannot wait to see my family and friends again and discover to what they have been up to.

Day 22

I am home!!! Seeing my family and friends again was even more wonderful than I expected! I am feeling now that I have gained many new perspectives over the last three weeks and changed in so many ways, but everything here at home is still the same. Although, my room does feel a little bigger and my bed a little softer I miss the comforts of Kenya. A piece of my heart will forever be with the people there and I hope that one day, I can visit again and see the new positive changes that have taken place. This journey has just begun and I cannot wait to start spreading my story and making change happen.

Asante Sana,

Homework and Avatar!

Jambo!

I have been spending the last week trying to get ahead on the work I will be missing at school while I am in Kenya! When I return, it will be getting close to finals and I definitely don't want to be behind. I have spent all of my weekend so far doing homework and right now, I happen to be watching "Avatar" while writing this blog. If you haven't seen "Avatar", it is a must! Even if you are not into the whole science-fiction, fantasy kind of movie, it doesn't matter. The production of the film is sure to wow anyone who watches it and the storyline is actually very innovative and clever. I think it deserves all of the awards and publicity it has received. So far, I am very impressed and I am telling you too to check out the movie!

Amani,

P.S. Jambo mean hello! and Amani means peace in Swahili! :)

Miss Teen Saskatchewan-World 2010!

A new Miss Teen Saskatchewan-World has been crowned! I crowned Ailey Korneychuk as Miss Teen Saskatchewan-World 2010 last night in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan at the Delta Bessborough Hotel! It was a wonderful evening full of young leaders taking the stage. Nine fantastic girls were crowned and all of them will move on to compete for the title of Miss Teen Canada-World 2010 in Toronto this summer! I am so excited to see all of the girls from each province again. I will also be meeting many new young ladies since I am unable to attend the Eastern Province Preliminaries due to my Kenya Me to We trip. So to those who are competing for a title and I can't make it to your province, GOOD LUCK and I wish you the best!!

So a little more info on the Saskatchewan pageant... The opening number song was Tik Tok by Ke$ha and  the whole crowd cheering and dancing about halfway through! The opening number was a success and the excitement didn't stop there. Each and every girl who went on stage looked stunning in her evening gown. The crowd was left in awe and I think every young lady truly felt like a princess. Once we got to the end of the show, it was time to announce girls who were to move on to the national competition. Since I am Miss Teen Saskatchewan-World 2009, I got to crown Miss Teen Saskatchewan-World 2010! I was thrilled because I haven't crowned a girl yet! The next lady I will crown will be the new Miss Teen Canada-World 2010! Woohoo, I am so excited! Anyways, congratulations to every girl who competed in Miss Teen Saskatchewan-World 2010! You are all beautiful and have so much to offer to the world, so keep striving to reach your goals and never give up! Anything is possible!

Travelling Around the World

Bonjour!!

I hope you all had a fabulous Easter Break! I  just worked and studied for a few English projects. I would say it was an enjoyable break.  At school today, I have been hearing numerous stories about what people did on their break and the most exciting things come from the people who went on the Europe trip with EF Tours. I was planning on going on the trip to London, Paris and Rome, but unfortunately it just didn't work out! Although, I happened to receive a beautiful original painting of the Eiffel Tower, and delectable white chocolate (my favourite) from a special someone. I was very thrilled to obtain a bit of the European culture.:)

Hearing all of these amazing stories about this trip abroad has got me thinking about all of the places I want to visit one day. I really want to go to Machu Picchu, The Great Wall of China, Madrid and that is just the start of the list! I want to visit places for the culture and history, to learn about what it is like all around this wonderful planet we call Earth.

In addition to dreaming about where I want to go, I have been dreaming about where I am going. I am leaving to the Masai Mara of Kenya in less than a month!! I am so excited and just cannot wait for my experience to begin. I am so thankful to Me To We Trips for this experience! I cannot wait to blog all about it! To check out more trips like Paris, Rome, Greece or Spain check out theEf Tours Website!  As well, on the website you can find links to Me To We Volunteer Trips!! You must look into one of the trips if you want to learn about world culture and visit these amazing places that exist all around the globe! Have any of you visited any of these fine places?? Let me know about your experience, I am very curious to learn more!

My goodness, it has been awhile since I have written a post!! I have been very busy! Since my last blog, Miss Teen Alberta has taken place and more girls were chosen to move on and compete for the title of Miss Teen Canada-World 2010! Wow, that is coming so soon, the next girl will be crowned in July. ahh! Crazy.

Going to Calgary for Miss Teen Alberta was just awesome! My mom Lisa got to come along for the ride and we had a blast. The pageant was at the Fairmont in downtown Calgary and it was gorgeous. The service was excellent and the food was superb! I wanted so bad to go to the Sunday brunch but we got super busy and had to miss out on that one. Hopefully next time! While I was there, I purchased a new perfume! It is my new favourite and it is Daisy by Marc Jacobs! I love it! You have to smell it. Mmm delicious!

The girls were all fabulous and the show was a success. It was so wondeful to see the girls again that I spent a week with in Toronto at Miss Teen Canada 2009. We had nothing but fun and enjoyed every moment of the weekend. So, Congratulations to all of the girls, you all amazed me and I look forward to seeing the qualifiers in July!!

My "Me to We" Kenya trip is coming up!! I will be flying to Kenya in May and I cannot wait! In the process of getting ready for the trip I have been continuing to go to the gym, get my mandatory immunizations, researching, and looking for a hiking backpack! Any advice on what kind of hiking backpack to buy? I have been looking and looking and just haven't found one that is quite right. Well the closer the trip gets, the more I will blog about it! Miss Teen BC-World 2010!

This past weekend I visited the Beautiful British Columbia! Only four hours away, I could feel the Olympic air in Kelowna.

During my stay in the Okanagan, the top girls were chosen to move on to compete in Miss Teen Canada-World 2010 this coming July in Toronto, Ontario. I met some outstanding girls that I hope to keep friendships with over the years. I was impressed with all of their skills in each competition area and just blown away by the kind and intelligent personalities possesed by the young women of British Columbia.

I got to catch up with Rhea Sideris- Miss Teen BC-World 2009 and Brittani Gray- Miss Teen Okanagan-World 2009. Both were a little sad to give up their crowns but were ecstatic to see the wonderful girls who would make it into the National Round.

Unfortunately I didn't get to Kelowna until Saturday evening so I didn't have a chance to meet all of the delegates right away and I didn't rehearse the opening number! I was still welcomed warmly and wished the girls warm wishes as they went in for their interviews.

On Sunday morning I woke up early to go for a swim and shower for the evenings show. When I got to the theatre, a buzz of excitement was in the air and I almost felt nervous as if I was to compete that evening as well! While getting make-up and hair done, I got to know some of the contestants a bit more and started to grow friendships with many. I heard great stories and learned what it was like to live in the BC area,  I was curious what the girls liked about the province, because in the future I would love to live there! I have always admired the breath-taking landscape and dreamt about attending the sought-after University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Maybe one day I will have the oppurtunity myself to know what it is like to live in the province of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

Finally, the show. After only practicing the Opening Number Once, I let my dancing skills take their course and naturally flow with the music. I knew that if I messed up it wouldn't be extremely noticable. As the night went on I couldn't help but be impressed by the talent walking across the stage. Many of the girls glowed while flowing across the stage and the audience seemed to be so intrigued by their beautiful gowns and moving platforms. I knew that it was going to be a tough choice for the judges to make.

I co-hosted the show with Michelle Weswaldi, the Executive Director of the Pageant and I enjoyed the feedback that we got from the audience. It came the time where we would announce the winners who would move on to Toronto in July to compete for the title of Miss Teen Canada-World 2010. I felt so happy reading out some of the finalists names and loved to see their excitement as they heard their names be called over the loud speakers. The new Miss Teen British Columbia-World 2010 is..... Polina Piskova!

Polina-Miss Teen BC-World 2010 and I!

I truly thought all of the girls were beautiful, smart and very accomplished. Congratulations to all of you girls! You are all amazing!

Olympics and Saskatchewan Winter Games!

The Olympics have begun! And so has the Saskatchewan Winter Games! Today was the big kick off to the games in Moose Jaw and athletes will be participating in events from Biathlon to Gymnastics. I was lucky to be an ambassador for the games and I toured athletes and coaches around the "Village" where they will be staying which is actually A.E. Peacock Collegiate which is the High School I attend!

At the Opening Ceremony this evening I got to escort special guests to and from the podium and main stage. A couple of the guests were George Reed who is one of the greatest running backs in CFL History and Fiona Bell Smith who is an Olympic Winter Games Medallist in Women's Hockey. Being able to meet and talk with these inspirational people made me really realize that dreams can come true as long as you work hard at them.

I promised I would post about the Musical "Curtains" that was performed this last week and I will! I am still trying to upload the videos so you can check out some of my choreography! I will try again tomorrow!

What is else is tomorrow.... hmmm MY BIRTHDAY! Oh my goodness I am going to be 17 years old. I can't believe it, time flies so fast!
